25 Influential Writers meme
March 16, 2009

Patrick White
I’ve noticed this interesting meme doing the rounds, so thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. I don’t really feel comfortable tagging anyone so I’ll just invite those who enjoyed reading it to play along.
Name 25 writers who have influenced you. These are not necessarily your favorite writers or those you most admire, but writers who have influenced you. Then you tag 25 people.
Like others I’m not actually going to tag 25 people but I would love to read lists from all of you if you would like to join in too.
In no particular order:
- Patrick White
- Helen Garner
- Janet Frame
- Donna Tartt
- Haruki Murakami
- Edmund White
- Peter Goldsworthy
- Gillian Mears
- Dorothy Porter
- Charles Dickens
- Thomas Hardy
- Evelyn Waugh
- T.S. Eliot
- Dylan Thomas
- J.D Salinger
- Charles Bukowski
- Richard Flanagan
- Tim Winton
- Sue Miller
- Francoise Sagan
- David Malouf
- Simon Armitage
- Simone de Beavouir
- George Orwell
- A.C. Grayling

What an extremely interesting list of authors. You remind me I must read Janet Frame, Patrick White, Tim Winton and Haruki Murakami.

Hey Litlove!
I’m glad you found them interesting! As this meme has been circulated around the blogsphere, my own TBR list has been growing longer and longer as other readers remind of authors I’ve temporarily forgotten.

Please write something! Perhaps you could tell us how you are thinking of buying a SAAB and what the experience of driving it around in a paddock was like? Maybe you could explain what books you would permanently stash in the glove box of the SAAB, which would tell us what type of a car he or she is.

I like your list too, though there are some there I don’t recognise. My reading group ANZ LitLovers has developed a list of Australian Writers ‘you must read’ and although I see that you disapprove of such lists, you may be interested to have a look anyway, if only to admire the riches there are in any ‘canon’ of classic and contemporary Australian literature. We keep adding to it all the time! See http://anzlitlovers.wordpress.com/the-anzlitlovers-list-of-books-you-must-read/
